Somernites Cruise Event Features Dukes of Hazzard Car Jump
During the latest Somernites Cruise event on June 28 in Somerset, KY., stuntman Raymond Kohn wowed the crowd by driving a replica of the iconic “Dukes of Hazzard” car, the General Lee, over the town’s fountain square. The spectacular jump, spanning 150 feet, took place in front of a massive audience of 35,000 fans and locals who came out to witness the thrilling stunt inspired by the popular TV series that aired from 1979 to 1985.
The event was part of the 25th annual classic car cruise organized by Somernites Cruises, a recurring event that runs from April to October each year.
After successfully completing the jump, Somernites Cruise Executive Director Keith Floyd expressed relief and gratitude, stating, “It’s done. Praise the Lord, everybody’s safe. [Kohn] is doing great.” Kohn himself shared his thoughts on the nerve-wracking experience, emphasizing the intense focus required to hit the ramp perfectly and ensure a safe landing. He acknowledged the risks involved in such a dangerous stunt but also highlighted the meticulous preparation that went into making the jump a success.
Following the adrenaline-pumping jump, several stars from “The Dukes of Hazzard” series, including John Schneider (Bo Duke) and Byron Cherry (Coy Duke), engaged with fans, signing autographs and posing for photos. Cherry, reflecting on the enduring popularity of the show and its multi-generational appeal, expressed gratitude for being part of a cultural phenomenon that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.
“It’s just a blessing to be a part of history,” Cherry remarked, noting how even young children today are familiar with the beloved TV series. The presence of the Dukes of Hazzard stars added an extra layer of excitement to the event, further enhancing the nostalgic experience for fans in attendance.
