Gas prices are on a decline just in time for the holiday weekend, a trend that has many Americans ready to hit the open road.

As noted by CNBC, “gas is the cheapest it’s ever been.” When adjusted for inflation, current gas prices are hovering around their lowest levels in the last two decades. Coupled with rising incomes, “Americans are now dedicating a smaller fraction of their earnings to energy expenses than they have in recent years.”

This positive trend is resonating across the country:

  • Tupelo, Mississippi: “If you’re driving, expect some pleasant surprises at the pump.”
  • New York City, New York: “Looks like gas prices are about to take a dive.”
  • Toledo, Ohio: “This summer, gas prices are surprisingly at a four-year low.”
  • Columbia, South Carolina: “Planning to travel ahead of the 4th of July weekend? Gas prices are currently at their lowest since 2021.”
  • Jacksonville, Florida: “Good news for gas prices — they continue to decline as the 4th of July approaches.”
  • Macon, Georgia: “Traveling this week? Gas prices in our area are at their lowest since 2021.”
  • The Arizona Republic: “Motorists in Arizona are enjoying a relatively inexpensive summer at the gas pump, despite recent international conflicts. Oil prices have fluctuated due to the ongoing Israel-Iran war, yet gas prices across the nation, including Arizona, have remained steady and, for the most part, have decreased.”
  • GasBuddy: Gas prices are projected to hit the lowest level for July 4th since 2021 as tensions in the Middle East ease.
  • CNN: “Current prices are impressively low — and trending downward. This July 4th might see the lowest gas prices since at least 2021, or even since the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, average incomes are higher than they were back then, meaning gasoline is consuming an ever-smaller slice of American paychecks.”
  • ABC News: “Most current travelers are opting for road trips. The national average for regular unleaded gas is $3.18 per gallon, down significantly from last year’s $3.49 per gallon.”
  • CNBC: “As Americans prepare for summer travels, it appears that prices at the pump are cooling down. This summer could usher in the lowest gas prices in years.”
  • The New York Times: “It seems summer road trips are safe from significant gasoline price increases. The last time prices were lower in late June was back in 2021.”
  • The Wall Street Journal: “The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline stands at $3.21, about 23 cents less than this time last year. Lower prices will benefit consumers, especially during the warmer months when driving increases. This year’s low energy prices have already played a role in bolstering the economy and keeping inflation in check.”
  • NBC News: “Gas prices are the most favorable they’ve been in four years — which is critical for the millions of people preparing to travel. At 20 cents less than last year, that’s an extra six or seven bucks in savings per fill-up. That’s actual cash!”
  • Fox Business: “Summer gas prices reach their lowest point in four years, even amidst Middle Eastern conflicts.”
