Santos Cerdán, the detained Socialist leader, is under investigation in a scandal involving Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s minority government is navigating increasingly turbulent waters as a series of corruption scandals envelop both his family and close associates.

The situation escalated today with the Spanish Supreme Court judge Puente ordering the pre-trial detention of Santos Cerdán, a former high-ranking official in the ruling Socialist Party, amid a significant corruption investigation.

Reuters reported:

“The Cerdán case represents the latest and most severe scandal in a series of controversies that have forced Sánchez to apologize and contend with increasing demands from his opponents for a snap election.”

“Judge Leopoldo Puente is currently investigating allegations that Cerdán, along with former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos and his aide Koldo García, received illicit payments for granting public works contracts.”

The corruption inquiry also implicates Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez (right), and his brother.

Cerdán, once a prominent figure within the Socialist Party, was compelled to resign from his position as a senior party official and lawmaker following a barrage of serious allegations against him.

“His resignation was prompted by Judge Puente’s statement indicating ‘strong evidence’ of Cerdán’s potential involvement in the ‘improper awarding’ of contracts.”

“In court documents reviewed by Reuters, Puente noted that Cerdán could face charges including membership in a criminal organization, bribery, and influence peddling.”

In a move reflective of the gravity of the situation, Cerdán was denied bail. The judge expressed concerns that he might “destroy or hide evidence” and deemed him a “flight risk.”

“The case relies on recordings spanning several years, obtained from García’s residence, which Puente stated appeared credible despite the defendants’ claims of voice manipulation. The judge concluded that Cerdán appeared to be the ringleader.”
