Authorities in Hawke’s Bay are sounding the alarm after a recent spate of thefts targeting railway infrastructure in the region. Police are warning that the theft of copper cable and bells from a railway bridge and level crossings could have deadly consequences.

According to reports, more than 750m of copper cable was stolen from a railway bridge north of Clive last month. In addition, four bells were taken from level crossings between April 12 and May 12.

Senior Constable Pehi Potaka emphasized the serious safety risks posed by tampering with rail systems. “Railway core cables are essential for transmitting power and signals to trains, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the rail systems,” he stated. “Crossing bells also play a crucial role in warning the public of approaching trains. The removal of these bells could lead to tragic accidents.”

Potaka vowed that police would crack down on any scrap metal yards found to be receiving stolen materials. He urged the public to report any suspicious activity or damage to rail crossings or bridges.

It is crucial for the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to prevent potential tragedies on the railway lines.
