The recent actions taken by the Department of Health and Human Services have sent shockwaves through the public health community. The decision to introduce new standards for vaccine approvals, revoke longstanding Covid-19 vaccine recommendations for healthy children and pregnant women, and dismiss all members of the CDC’s vaccine advisory committee marks a significant departure from previous vaccine policies aimed at safeguarding public health.

In response to these developments, the Vaccine Integrity Project, spearheaded by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, has emerged as a critical player in ensuring that vaccine use in the United States remains grounded in evidence-based practices to protect the public. Through engaging with over 80 stakeholders, including clinicians, academics, public health officials, insurers, and industry leaders, the project has identified two primary objectives: maintaining trusted immunization guidance and combating misinformation surrounding vaccines.

The upcoming phase of the Vaccine Integrity Project will focus on the development of evidence-based guidelines for influenza, RSV, and Covid-19. By convening experts from various sectors of the vaccination ecosystem, the project aims to create comprehensive scientific briefs on these respiratory diseases, which will serve as the foundation for drafting and disseminating vaccine recommendations by medical professional associations.

It is crucial that these efforts remain independent of governmental influence, with participants disclosing any conflicts of interest and the project being funded by philanthropic sources. While this initiative is not intended to replace the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, it seeks to provide clinicians with the necessary guidance to protect Americans from respiratory illnesses that pose significant health risks.

The impact of vaccination efforts cannot be overstated, with flu vaccines alone preventing millions of illnesses and thousands of deaths each season. The success of Covid-19 vaccination in reducing hospitalizations among high-risk populations further underscores the importance of evidence-based immunization strategies in protecting public health.

As the Vaccine Integrity Project moves forward, collaboration within the scientific and medical communities will be essential in addressing the challenges ahead, including strengthening vaccine safety systems, supporting state and local health departments, and coordinating policy efforts. By upholding principles of integrity, openness, and scientific rigor, the project aims to uphold the vital role of science in guiding public health decisions.

Michael T. Osterholm, Ph.D., M.P.H., a key member of the Vaccine Integrity Project Steering Committee, emphasizes the importance of collective action in safeguarding the public health systems that have been built over decades. In times of uncertainty, it is crucial to reaffirm the value of science and evidence in shaping policies that protect the well-being of the population.
