Democratic Pride Takes a Dive

Only 34 percent of Democrats now express pride in being American, according to the latest data from Gallup. This marks a significant decline in patriotic sentiment among the party since Trump’s resounding election victory last year.

The findings reveal:

Democrats bear the brunt of the year’s drop in American pride, with only 36% claiming to be extremely or very proud, a stark contrast to 62% just a year prior. This is the second occasion in which Democratic pride has dipped below the majority threshold, previously noted in 2020 when it hit 42%, during the final year of Trump’s first term.

That particular poll was conducted amidst the initial chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic and shortly after the tragic murder of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis.

The decline in pride among Democrats has contributed to an overall dip in American patriotism, which now sits at an all-time low of 58 percent. A stark contrast to the early 2000s when national pride was nearly universal.

Meanwhile, Republicans seem to be basking in a pride renaissance. Approximately 92 percent of Republicans identify as extremely or very proud, a notable increase from 85 percent in 2024.

Gallup’s analysis encapsulates the situation succinctly:

These shifts have largely unfolded over the past decade, coinciding with rising pessimism regarding economic opportunities for the younger generations, widespread dissatisfaction with the national landscape, deepening ideological divides, and heightened partisan strife during both the Trump and Biden administrations.

In a nutshell, it seems that for many Democrats, the love for their country is waning faster than a summer tan. Whether this sentiment will reverse remains to be seen, but for now, it paints a rather bleak picture of national pride in the current political climate.
