Riptide Rampage: A 4th of July to Remember in Newport Beach
This past 4th of July weekend, Newport Beach, California, became the setting for a dramatic aquatic rescue operation as hundreds found themselves at the mercy of a formidable rip current.
Amidst the celebratory atmosphere, families flocked to the Southern California coastline, blissfully unaware of the Beach Hazards Statement warning beachgoers about the impending perils of large swells and powerful rip currents.
The beach hazards warning, effective until Sunday evening, detailed the following:
- WHAT: Dangerous rip currents and breaking waves due to expected elevated surf.
- WHERE: Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands, Ventura County Beaches, Malibu Coast, and Los Angeles County Beaches.
- WHEN: Through Sunday evening.
- IMPACTS: Increased risk of ocean drowning, with rip currents capable of pulling swimmers and surfers out to sea. Additionally, waves can wash individuals off beaches and rocks, posing a threat to small boats in nearshore waters.
Officials urged beachgoers to stay out of the water amidst these hazardous conditions, advising them to remain close to lifeguard towers. The warning also cautioned against the dangers of rock jetties, which can be treacherous during such tumultuous conditions.
Footage captured by a Huntington Beach Police helicopter vividly illustrated the ferocious rip currents at play.

John Layman, a Newport Beach resident and former lifeguard, shared his insights on the perilous rip currents with KTLA. “There are significant pauses in the surf, followed by powerful sets of waves — typically five to six at a time. It may appear calm momentarily, but when the big waves hit, they toss people around. When the ocean takes in a lot of water, it has to release it, resulting in these dangerous rip tides,” Layman explained.
