The Sunday afternoon weather could turn turbulent with thunderstorms and hail expected in the foothills and Eastern Plains.

The National Weather Service in Boulder has issued a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. on Sunday for the Denver Metro area. Temperatures are set to rise to the low 90s before the storms hit.

Westerly winds will intensify in the afternoon, with steady speeds ranging from 6 to 11 miles per hour and gusts reaching up to 20 miles per hour.

Some of the afternoon storms could be severe, bringing hail up to 2 inches in diameter and damaging winds. The main impact is expected across the plains, according to the weather service.

The storms and windy conditions are likely to persist into Sunday night.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecasted for Monday and Tuesday, followed by a heatwave with temperatures soaring into the triple digits on Wednesday, as per the weather service’s predictions.
