In a remote village in Scotland, a bold billboard by the late Milly Thompson challenged societal norms by featuring middle-aged women in swimwear and scuba gear, defying the typical portrayal of youth and perfection in advertisements. This unconventional artwork reflects Thompson’s commitment to empowering older women and subverting patriarchal expectations.

Known for her provocative and intimate works, Thompson’s art often explored the female body through the lens of luxury and leisure. Her exhibition at Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art showcased pieces like “Near Witches” (2021), which exuded sensuality and defiance, capturing the essence of her unique artistic voice.

As a former member of the artist collective BANK, Thompson was no stranger to critiquing consumerism and societal norms. In her solo career, she shifted her focus to the middle-aged female body, a subject rarely explored in art history. Through paintings, sculptures, and videos, she delved into the complexities of women’s experiences in a patriarchal world.

Thompson’s recent paintings, created before her untimely passing, featured abstract compositions that symbolized women breaking free from societal constraints. By incorporating symbols and emojis, she bridged the gap between contemporary culture and historical contexts, highlighting the enduring struggles of women across time.

Her manifesto “I Choose Painting” underscored Thompson’s rebellious spirit, rejecting conventional notions of art and embracing sensuality as a radical form of expression. Her work challenged the male-dominated art world and offered a fresh perspective on femininity and beauty.

Through her art, Thompson championed the idea that beauty lies in attitude and authenticity, rather than conforming to societal standards. She embraced both the repressed and rampant aspects of femininity, inviting viewers to reconsider their perceptions of women and self-image.

The exhibition at Goldsmiths CCA not only showcased Thompson’s visual art but also highlighted her writings and collaborations, showcasing the depth and diversity of her practice. By engaging with complex issues of gender, power, and representation, Thompson left a lasting impact on the art world and beyond.

Milly Thompson: My Body Temperature is Feeling Good will be on display at Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art in London until August 24. Curated by Natasha Hoare and Sarah McCrory, the exhibition celebrates Thompson’s legacy and her bold contributions to contemporary art.
