Renowned Democratic strategist James Carville forecasted that the enactment of President Donald Trump’s controversial “big, beautiful bill,” would lead to a “mass extinction event” for Republicans in Congress and open doors for Democrats in future elections.

“Political historians will look back on this as a mass extinction event because many of them will face extinction when voters cast their ballots in response to this,” Carville told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Thursday.

James Carville predicted that Democrats could pick up more than 40 House seats in the wake of President Donald Trump’s mega bill.

Carville’s remarks were made during a panel discussion with fellow Democratic strategist Paul Begala, who argued that Republicans in Congress will suffer from the effects of Trump’s bill, which significantly reduces Medicaid funding to facilitate tax breaks for the wealthy.

“Medicaid is highly valued, Trump even garnered support from Medicaid beneficiaries. He secured their votes and, as a good leader rewards his supporters, a great leader extends a hand to new supporters, but a foolish leader punishes his own supporters,” Begala remarked.

Begala referenced polling from Kaiser Family Foundation indicating that a large majority of Democrats, independents, and Republicans hold a favorable view of Medicaid. The research also revealed that most Americans have some form of connection to Medicaid.

Trump’s extensive bill, spanning 900 pages, extends tax cuts for affluent households, slashes over $1 trillion from Medicaid, reduces food assistance for low-income families, and places rural hospitals at risk of closure. The Congressional Budget Office projected that Trump’s bill could increase the national debt by $3.3 trillion.

Carville concurred with Begala, labeling Trump‘s comprehensive bill as “the most unpopular legislation in history.” He suggested that Democrats could leverage the passage of this bill to elevate their standing.

“Every Democrat stood in opposition to this. Every Democrat, irrespective of their beliefs, background, or geographic location, can unite around this issue and carry it through to 2026,” Carville remarked. “And Paul is correct, we will gain more than 40 House seats, mark my words.”
