Chicago Independence Day Weekend Sees 51 Victims, Nine Fatalities
Over the Independence Day weekend, a total of 51 individuals were shot in Chicago, with seven losing their lives to gun violence. Additionally, two more individuals were killed through other means, bringing the weekend’s homicide count to nine. These statistics come from HeyJackass, an independent site that tracks crime data in the city.
Despite the alarming numbers, this year’s Independence Day weekend marked the lowest toll since at least 2015, based on HeyJackass’ records. The 2018 holiday weekend had one fewer victim, but it spanned nearly six days due to the Fourth of July falling on a Wednesday.
Chicago police and fire crews responded to three mass shootings over the holiday weekend, accounting for 15 of the total victims. One of these incidents took place near the Cook County Jail in the 2700 block of South California. A mass shooting is typically defined as an incident where four or more individuals are shot.
One of the most high-profile cases from the weekend involved a mother in Logan Square who is charged with stabbing her three children and setting their house on fire on Independence Day. Tragically, her 4-year-old son did not survive. Prosecutors revealed that the mother believed her children were possessed by the devil.
Authorities have taken suspects into custody in connection with two additional homicides over the weekend. These include a shooting in the 800 block of North Cambridge and the apparent beating death of an individual during a fight at the Clark-Lake CTA station.
