Sean “Diddy” Combs, the rap mogul, has had his sentencing date finalized after a recent verdict in his case. On Tuesday, July 8, Judge Arun Subramanian approved the proposal from both the prosecutors and Diddy’s legal team to keep the sentencing date on October 3, as reported by the BBC.
The decision comes shortly after a jury found Diddy guilty of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution on July 2. He was, however, acquitted of the charges of racketeering conspiracy and two counts of sex trafficking. Diddy had previously pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Since the trial began at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan U.S. Courthouse in New York City on May 5, several witnesses have testified about their alleged interactions with the rapper. Following his arrest in September 2024, Diddy faced charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution.
Despite the seriousness of the charges, Diddy’s defense team has been advocating for a more lenient sentence. While each charge carries a maximum prison term of 10 years, his attorneys are pushing for a sentence of 21 to 27 months, while prosecutors are seeking 51 to 63 months. Diddy will receive credit for the time served since his arrest in September 2024.
After the verdict was reached, Diddy’s lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, requested his immediate release from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. However, the judge denied bail and ordered Diddy to remain in custody until his sentencing.
During a press conference outside the court, Diddy’s defense team reiterated his innocence, with attorney Teny Geragos stating, “Sean Combs has not sexually assaulted anybody.” Agnifilo also expressed confidence in continuing to fight for Diddy’s innocence.
Former federal prosecutor Mark Chutkow, not involved in Diddy’s case, provided insight into the potential sentencing. He mentioned that the prostitution charges, being the least serious in the indictment, might not result in a maximum sentence due to the acquittal on more severe charges.
In light of the serious nature of the allegations, it is crucial to provide support for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Resources such as the National Sexual Assault Hotline, National Domestic Violence Hotline, and National Human Trafficking Hotline are available for those in need of assistance.
As the legal proceedings continue, Diddy’s future remains uncertain. The upcoming sentencing date on October 3 will determine the consequences he will face for the charges brought against him. The case has garnered significant attention, and the final outcome will have lasting implications for the rap mogul and those involved in the trial.
