Two 14-year-old boys have been charged with a violent armed carjacking that occurred in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago last month, highlighting the escalating concerns surrounding youth violence in the city.

The incident took place on June 10 at approximately 4:15 a.m. in the 1700 block of West Peterson Avenue. According to Chicago police, the two teenagers, who are not even old enough to drive legally, were involved in a planned ambush along with two other individuals. The group arrived in a white sedan and used the vehicle to strike a 39-year-old man, who was critically injured in the attack. Armed with at least one firearm, they proceeded to steal the man’s belongings and fled the scene in his blue Toyota Highlander.

One of the suspects was apprehended on July 1, while the second was arrested on July 7. Both boys have been charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. Additionally, one of the teens faces an extra charge of unlawful possession of a weapon. The identities of the perpetrators and further details of the crime are currently withheld under Illinois’ juvenile court confidentiality laws.

This disturbing incident serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of youth violence in Chicago and the need for comprehensive measures to address the issue. The remaining two individuals involved in the carjacking are still at large, prompting heightened vigilance from law enforcement and the community.
