“Modern Family” star Eric Stonestreet recently revealed his disappointment over a rejected spinoff centered around the beloved characters of Cameron Tucker and Mitchell Pritchett. The proposed spinoff would have followed Cam, Mitch, and their daughter Lily as they navigate life in Missouri after leaving California in the final season of the hit sitcom.
Despite a script being written by cocreator Chris Lloyd and some of the writers, ABC ultimately turned down the idea, leaving Stonestreet feeling hurt. He expressed his belief that the network no longer sees potential in the spinoff, stating, “They had their chance. Chris Lloyd and a couple of the writers wrote a really great script that spun Jesse and I off in our life in Missouri. They said no. They said, ‘We don’t want to do it.'”
The rejection left Stonestreet feeling disheartened, as he believed the spinoff would have been a success with the right team behind it. He shared, “I think it hurt Jesse and I’s feelings. I think it hurt Chris Lloyd’s feelings. I think Jesse and I maybe felt they thought of us as the old guys that didn’t seem worthy of keeping those characters going. It felt a little hurtful.”
While cocreator Steve Levitan decided against pursuing the spinoff due to concerns about maintaining the quality of the brand, Stonestreet remains convinced that it would have been a hit. He emphasized, “My point was always like, we have the right people in place, it would have been great … if ABC would have said, ‘Let’s do it,’ I think we’d be on right now.”
Stonestreet also reflected on his experience working with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who played his on-screen husband Mitch. Despite not knowing each other before “Modern Family” began in 2009, the two actors developed a strong working relationship and chemistry on set.
Looking to the future, Stonestreet expressed his interest in the entire cast reuniting for one-off holiday specials instead of pursuing a spinoff. He mentioned, “I love my character. I love the show. I love Jesse. We had a great working relationship. We had great chemistry. We didn’t know each other and we built these characters that Steve and Chris wrote and cultivated.”
Fans of “Modern Family” may be disappointed that the spinoff didn’t come to fruition, but the possibility of holiday specials featuring the beloved characters offers a glimmer of hope for future reunions.
