Chris Rigg, the 17-year-old Sunderland midfielder, stole the show in a local derby against Middlesbrough with a piece of improvised magic that left the stadium gasping and the nation in awe. An hour after the final whistle, Rigg reflects on his stunning backheel goal that secured a 1-0 victory for Sunderland.

The goal came in the 24th minute after Sunderland’s goalkeeper, Anthony Patterson, launched a long pass to Romaine Mundle on the left. As the ball found its way to Patrick Roberts, Rigg positioned himself in the center circle, anticipating a chance to follow up on a potential shot. When Roberts took a shot that was deflected by George Edmundson, Rigg pounced on the loose ball with a less-than-perfect first touch.

“I had to take it away from the goalkeeper,” Rigg explains, demonstrating how he tried to regain control of the ball. With limited options and a narrow angle, Rigg instinctively backheeled the ball towards the goal line, surprising everyone with his audacious skill and composure.

The young midfielder, who made his senior debut at the age of 15, admits to feeling nervous but embraces the opportunity to play in front of a crowd. Describing himself as a traditional midfielder who loves to attack and defend, Rigg draws inspiration from players like Modric, Zidane, Lampard, and Gerrard, while aspiring to carve his own path in the game.

Rigg’s moment of brilliance has put him in the spotlight, with scouts from across Europe taking notice of Sunderland’s rising star. Under the guidance of manager Regis Le Bris, Sunderland’s youthful squad has been making waves in the Championship, with Rigg leading the charge as they aim for promotion.

Le Bris praises Rigg’s maturity and versatility on the field, emphasizing the importance of consistency and development in his promising career. While the young midfielder remains grounded and focused on continuous improvement, the future looks bright for Chris Rigg and Sunderland as they continue their ascent in the footballing world.

As Rigg savors his unforgettable goal and looks ahead to future challenges, one thing is clear – his journey is just beginning, one step – or backheel – at a time.
