Russia launched a series of heavy airstrikes on Ukraine just before a conference in Rome where Kyiv secured billions of dollars in aid pledges. Concurrently, US-Russian talks in Kuala Lumpur highlighted Washington’s frustration with Moscow over the ongoing conflict.

Recent attacks resulted in two deaths, 26 injuries, and widespread damage in Kyiv due to missile and drone strikes across the capital and other regions of Ukraine.

During the Rome conference focused on Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for increased utilization of frozen Russian assets for rebuilding efforts and emphasized the need for weapons, joint defense production, and investments.

Over €10 Billion Committed for Ukraine’s Reconstruction

The conference participants pledged over €10 billion to support Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announcing the commitment. Additionally, the European Commission pledged €2.3 billion in aid.

US President Donald Trump expressed growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the lack of progress in resolving the conflict that started with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Trump criticized Putin for obstructing US efforts to end the war.

During talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the need for Moscow to show more flexibility in resolving the conflict. Rubio also mentioned ongoing discussions in the US Senate regarding potential new sanctions on Russia.

Zelenskyy reported that Russia’s recent assault involved around 400 drones and 18 missiles targeting Kyiv, resulting in explosions and anti-aircraft fire across the city. Air defenses managed to intercept most of the drones, but the attacks have strained Ukraine’s defenses amid renewed pressure on the front lines.

Challenges Faced by Ukraine’s Air Defenses

Russia’s intensified airstrikes have put pressure on Ukraine’s defenses, forcing residents into bomb shelters and causing damage in various cities. Moscow claimed to have targeted military-industrial sites in Kyiv but denied targeting civilians, despite reports of civilian casualties.

In response to escalating attacks, Washington resumed deliveries of defensive weaponry to Kyiv, including shells and precision artillery missiles. Trump also expressed readiness to provide additional Patriot air-defense missiles to Ukraine, crucial for defending against Russian ballistic missiles.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on Trump to continue supporting Ukraine and Europe, offering to purchase Patriot air defense systems from the US for Ukraine’s defense. Meanwhile, the Kremlin downplayed Trump’s criticisms, expressing a commitment to improving relations with Washington.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov dismissed claims of stalled diplomatic efforts and announced plans for new consultations to enhance relations in the near future.
