A New York City Man Sues Nutribullet After Blender Explosion

A man from New York City claims he suffered permanent injuries when a Nutribullet blender exploded while he was making a protein smoothie. Joseph Sanchez put celery, milk, and protein powder into the blender in July 2022, resulting in the plastic cup exploding and causing shrapnel to injure his right hand.

Sanchez, a 46-year-old hairdresser, managed to use a necktie as a tourniquet to slow the bleeding before seeking medical help. He was diagnosed with a severed artery in his right hand and now experiences numbness, severe pain, and lasting trauma as a result of the incident.

According to Sanchez’s lawsuit against Nutribullet, the company was aware of the blender’s tendency to over-pressurize and explode, with more than 140 personal injury and liability lawsuits filed against them since 2014. Despite a $10 million settlement in a class action case in 2022, Nutribullet has not issued a recall or redesigned the blender.

Another case involving a woman who was injured by a Nutribullet explosion was dismissed by a New Jersey federal judge due to lack of evidence supporting the claim of a defective design. The company, known as the top “personal blending brand” with over 80 million customers worldwide, has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.
