Property disputes between neighbors are not uncommon, but one Virginia homeowner found himself in the middle of a tree-cutting disaster that escalated quickly. The homeowner took to Reddit’s r/TreeLaw subreddit to share his story of a new neighbor who cut down his healthy 89-year-old oak tree without realizing where the property lines were.

According to the homeowner, the neighbor decided to take matters into his own hands because he didn’t like the tree being near his shed. Despite the homeowner pointing out clearly marked property stakes that showed the tree was roughly forty feet into his yard, the neighbor remained unapologetic. In fact, the neighbor demanded that the homeowner pay half of the $2,000 he spent to have the tree cut down.

Thankfully, the homeowner was able to intervene before another adjacent oak tree was cut down. However, the damage was already done, with the stump of the 89-year-old oak tree measuring 89 inches in circumference.

In true TreeLaw fashion, the homeowner took swift action. He documented the incident with before-and-after photos, filed a police report, contacted a tree lawyer, obtained his wife’s account in writing, consulted an arborist, and even informed the property manager next door, as it appeared that trees from that property were also affected.

Virginia law allows for triple damages for timber trespass, and the homeowner made it clear that he intends to pursue this avenue thoroughly. The story gained traction in the comments section, with one Redditor predicting that the neighbor may end up footing the bill for the homeowner’s children’s college education.
