Mark Gatiss, the Emmy-winning co-creator/star of “Sherlock,” is back with a new show called “Bookish,” where he continues to explore the art of murder mysteries. Gatiss, a murder mystery aficionado, is always looking for new ways to surprise audiences and keep them on their toes. He draws inspiration from the works of Agatha Christie, who he believes has covered every possible angle in the genre.

In “Bookish,” set to premiere on July 16 on U&Alibi and later on PBS in the U.S., Gatiss plays Gabriel Book, a gay man in a lavender marriage during a time when homosexuality was illegal. The series is set in 1946 London, a period of societal change post-WWII. Gatiss wanted to shine a light on different aspects of society and explore the underexamined themes of the time.

While Gatiss is known for his work in various genres, including fantasy, sci-fi, and period pieces, “Bookish” is a departure from the norm. He challenges the notion of “cozy crime” and infuses the series with depth, exploring themes of despair and sadness alongside the mystery and suspense.

Despite the serious undertones, “Bookish” is not devoid of humor. Gatiss brings a lighthearted attitude to his character, celebrating joy amidst the melancholy. The series features a charming cast, including Connor Finch as Jack and a scene-stealing dog, adding to the dynamic storytelling.

“Bookish” has already been renewed for a second season, showcasing the confidence in Gatiss’s storytelling abilities. In addition to his TV work, Gatiss is set to appear in blockbuster films like “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” where he plays a 1960s talk show host. Director Matt Shakman praises Gatiss’s talent and versatility, highlighting his ability to bring characters to life on screen.

Gatiss’s attention to detail extends to his role in “Fantastic Four,” where he studied archival television to embody the essence of the time period. He enjoys the process of dressing up and transforming into different characters, using costumes, wigs, and props to fully immerse himself in the role.

“Bookish” promises to be a captivating series that combines mystery, social commentary, and humor in a unique and engaging way. Premiering on July 16, viewers can expect a fresh take on the murder mystery genre from the creative mind of Mark Gatiss.
