Chandler Jones, a former NFL star, found himself in a heated encounter with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in 2023. The incident, which took place on Nov. 27, involved authorities attempting to take Jones to a medical facility in Arizona after receiving a court-ordered mental health petition.
Body-worn camera footage revealed that officers initially struggled to get Jones to come out of his Arizona mansion. Eventually, Jones emerged from his garage wearing nothing but his underwear, rambling about a woman in his driveway and accusing her dogs of biting him. Despite declining to press charges against the woman, Jones began sobbing shortly after.
As the situation escalated, Jones became agitated and told the officers to leave. A scuffle ensued, and Jones was eventually restrained and informed that he would be taken to a doctor based on the court order. In an attempt to seek help, Jones asked if he could call his brother, UFC superstar Jon Jones, but was unable to reach him.
Throughout the ordeal, Jones displayed emotional distress and resistance to receiving help. Despite his reluctance, officers eventually escorted him to a nearby psychiatric facility without further incident.
Following the incident, Jones addressed it on his Instagram page in December 2023. The 34-year-old former Pro Bowler had been released by the Raiders a few months prior and has not returned to the NFL since.
The incident sheds light on the challenges faced by athletes in managing mental health issues and seeking appropriate support. It also highlights the importance of intervention and support systems in place to assist individuals in crisis.
