A man in a wheelchair claimed he was shot during a robbery on the Near North Side Tuesday afternoon, but local Alderman Brian Hopkins believes the story may be fabricated. The 37-year-old man reported to 911 that he had been shot in the left leg while traveling from the intersection of Division and Clark. He claimed that someone shot him during a robbery, but he was unable to identify the perpetrator.

However, Alderman Hopkins shared in an email to constituents that video footage contradicts the man’s story. There were no incidents captured on camera at the reported time and location. It is now being investigated whether the man may have actually suffered an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg.

Contrary to the man’s claims, there were no 911 calls for shots fired in the area, and officers patrolling the area did not report hearing any gunfire. The man made the call to 911 near Dearborn and Oak streets, which led to Washington Square Park being wrongly associated with the alleged incident.

Alderman Hopkins reassured residents in his email that there were no reports of shots fired in the area and that the Chicago Police Department is conducting an ongoing investigation into the matter.

This incident serves as a reminder to always verify information before jumping to conclusions. It is essential to rely on concrete evidence and facts rather than hearsay. The community can rest assured that authorities are diligently looking into the situation to determine the truth behind the man’s claims.
