The final season of “Stranger Things” may have bid farewell to Metallica and the Eddie Munson character, but heavy metal music is still very much a part of the show, as evident in the latest trailer released today.

The trailer features apocalyptic scenes with a bombastic riff accompanied by a symphonic arrangement and high-pitched, operatic wailing reminiscent of the classic heavy metal singing style known as the “air-raid siren.” Surprisingly, the song featured in the trailer is Deep Purple’s iconic 1970 track “Child in Time” from their album “In Rock.” While the instrumental backing has been updated with strings and synthesizers, the vocals seem to be original recordings by Deep Purple’s lead singer Ian Gillan.

The use of “Child in Time” in the trailer suggests that the song’s deafening volume plays a crucial role in the narrative, as a character is seen preparing to unleash it as a weapon against the monsters threatening Hawkins, Indiana.

“Child in Time” is considered one of the early epics of heavy metal, clocking in at nearly ten and a half minutes with a dramatic build-up and a memorable vocal performance by Gillan. The song’s lyrics, inspired by nuclear war, add to its intensity and impact.

Ian Gillan, known for his powerful vocals and signature scream, revealed in a recent interview that performing “Child in Time” became increasingly challenging as he grew older. Despite his reservations about the song, Gillan acknowledged the lasting legacy of the track and his role in shaping the heavy metal genre.

While the inclusion of “Child in Time” in the final season of “Stranger Things” may surprise fans, it serves as a fitting tribute to the heyday of heavy metal and showcases the enduring appeal of classic rock music in popular culture. The use of iconic songs like this highlights the show’s attention to detail and commitment to creating a nostalgic yet thrilling viewing experience for audiences.
