In a poignant ceremony today, President Donald J. Trump took a significant step in the ongoing battle against the fentanyl crisis by formally enacting the HALT Fentanyl Act. This legislation permanently categorizes fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act, a move aimed at intensifying the fight against the devastating impact of this substance.

As President Trump noted, this new law signifies “another defeat for the savage drug smugglers, criminals, and cartels”—a bold assertion that aligns with various initiatives his administration has undertaken to combat the destructive influence of foreign drug traffickers in American neighborhoods.

Accompanied by several families whose lives have been irrevocably altered by the fentanyl epidemic, President Trump addressed the emotional toll of this crisis:

  • Greg Swan, who tragically lost his son to fentanyl, expressed gratitude: “Thank you, Mr. President, for halting the border crossings—full stop, mic drop. Your efforts have brought light to a story that many tried to obscure, and we are much safer because of it.” Watch
  • Anne Fundner, who also lost her son, conveyed her relief: “In the past four years, fentanyl has become the leading cause of death for Americans aged 15 to 48. Mr. President, we felt overlooked during that time, but you’ve changed the narrative. This legislation is a lifeline for families aiming to protect their loved ones. Thank you for prioritizing our children’s safety; this is what we voted for.” Watch
  • Jackie Siegel, who lost both her daughter and sister to drug overdoses, shared her sentiments: “Mr. President, it’s a privilege to be present today on behalf of my family for this crucial signing.” Watch
