U.S. Diplomacy on Shaky Ground as Israeli Airstrikes Target Syrian Forces

As a fresh round of Israeli airstrikes against Syrian military positions sends shockwaves through an already fragile Middle Eastern peace, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is making earnest efforts to avert an all-out conflict.

Following two consecutive days of aggression from Israel, Rubio expressed cautious optimism for a cessation of hostilities. “It’s complicated, obviously. These are historic, longstanding rivalries among various groups in southwestern Syria — including Bedouins and the Druze community. This has culminated in a regrettable misunderstanding between the Israeli and Syrian sides,” he articulated in a video posted to X.

“We’ve been in continuous dialogue with both sides throughout the night and into the morning. We believe we are moving towards genuine de-escalation,” he added.

Rubio went on to express hopes of redirecting efforts towards rebuilding Syria, aiming for a more stable situation in the region. “In the next few hours, we are optimistic about making significant progress to conclude the recent hostilities,” he stated.

While the majority of Syria is Muslim, the Druze community practices a distinct faith. Following the ascension of a Muslim-majority government last year, the Druze expressed concerns over becoming targets of the regime, which has vowed to respect all religions while simultaneously seeking annexation by Israel, where a Druze population also resides.

As Rubio delivered his remarks in Washington, leaders from the Druze community in Syria announced a cease-fire, as reported by NBC. This development followed Israeli air strikes that targeted sites in Damascus.

However, skepticism regarding the cease-fire emerged from Druze leaders, according to the Times of Israel.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog took a stern stance amid ongoing attacks, asserting, “Israel does not remain passive when there is even a hint of a jihadist threat at our borders.”

“Moreover, Israel cannot stand idly by when our allies and kin, the Druze community members — integral to our society — are under threat and risk facing a horrific massacre,” he declared.

Israel’s military involvement was triggered by violent clashes among Muslim Bedouin factions near Sweida, which resulted in nearly 100 fatalities, as highlighted by the Times of Israel.

In a joint statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized their commitment to safeguarding the Druze in Syria due to their deep-rooted familial and historical connections with Israeli Druze citizens. They asserted their actions aim to prevent the Syrian regime from inflicting harm and to ensure the demilitarization of areas adjacent to the Israeli-Syrian border.

The advance of Syrian troops into this politically sensitive region allegedly breached the demilitarization agreements established to prevent the influx of forces and weaponry that could threaten Israel’s security, according to official statements.

In contrast, the Syrian Interior Ministry spokesperson Noureddine Al-Baba claimed that the “clashes are fundamentally not sectarian in nature,” insisting that “the true conflict lies between the state and criminal elements, rather than between the state and any specific Syrian community.” He further asserted that the state considers the Druze community in Sweida as a vital partner in promoting national unity.
