FDA: Juul can continue selling its tobacco and menthol e-cigarettes

Juul, the popular vaping brand, has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to keep its e-cigarettes on the market. This decision comes as a relief to the company, which has faced challenges in recent years after being associated with the teen vaping trend.

The FDA regulators announced that Juul’s studies have shown that its e-cigarettes are less harmful for adult smokers, who can benefit from switching completely to vaping. The approval applies to both tobacco- and menthol-flavored versions of Juul’s reusable product, which uses nicotine-filled cartridges in two different strengths. Juul had previously discontinued several fruit and candy flavors that were popular among teens.

Juul will now be one of only two U.S. companies authorized to sell menthol-flavored vapes, a preference among many adult smokers. CEO K.C. Crosthwaite expressed his satisfaction with the decision, stating that the company had made a scientifically sound case for the role that menthol can play in e-vapor.

However, the FDA’s decision is likely to face opposition from parents, politicians, and anti-tobacco groups who have long advocated for Juul products to be banned due to their role in the rise of underage vaping. Yolonda Richardson, CEO of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, criticized the decision as a step in the wrong direction.

Once valued at over $13 billion, Juul revolutionized the vaping industry with its sleek e-cigarettes. However, the company has faced setbacks, including job cuts and lawsuits, over its involvement in the youth vaping epidemic. The FDA had initially ordered Juul to remove its products from the market in 2022 but later reversed course following a legal challenge from the company.

The FDA’s decision does not constitute an endorsement, and the agency reiterated that non-smokers should not use Juul or any other e-cigarettes. The determination indicates that smokers who switch completely to Juul can reduce their exposure to harmful chemicals found in traditional cigarettes.

Looking ahead, Juul is hopeful of gaining authorization for its next-generation device and is considering applying for more flavors. The company emphasizes the importance of providing regulated options for American adults who use tobacco.

In recent years, the FDA has authorized a few e-cigarettes to help adult smokers reduce their cigarette consumption. Juul’s main competitors, Vuse and Njoy, have also received FDA permission to remain on the market.

Despite its past controversies, Juul remains a significant player in the vaping industry. The company’s journey from a startup founded by two Stanford University students to a market leader has been marked by both success and challenges. As the vaping landscape continues to evolve, Juul is navigating regulatory scrutiny while striving to meet the FDA’s public health requirements.
