Perplexity, a search-focused AI startup, is making waves in the AI market by quietly expanding into India, positioning itself for mass-market scale in the world’s second-largest internet and smartphone market. While OpenAI has established itself as a leader in the U.S., Perplexity is taking a different approach by targeting the Indian market for rapid growth.

One of Perplexity’s significant moves in India is its partnership with Bharti Airtel, the country’s second-largest telecom operator, to offer a free 12-month Perplexity Pro subscription to all 360 million Airtel subscribers. This exclusive deal sets Perplexity apart from other AI startups in the country and provides a unique opportunity to capture a large user base.

In Q2, Perplexity saw a 600% year-over-year surge in downloads in India, reaching 2.8 million. The company’s monthly active users also grew by 640% in the same period, making India its largest market in terms of MAUs. Despite facing competition from OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Perplexity is gaining traction and expanding its reach in the country.

To leverage India’s user base, Perplexity has formed strategic partnerships with key players in the market, such as Paytm, to offer AI-powered search through their platform. The company’s CEO, Aravind Srinivas, has shown a commitment to investing in India’s AI ecosystem and has plans to hire local talent to support the company’s growth in the region.

India’s tech-savvy user base and limited competition in the AI search space make it an attractive market for Perplexity’s expansion. The company aims to monetize its large user base effectively, despite facing challenges in generating revenue compared to competitors like ChatGPT.

While Perplexity has not yet generated significant in-app revenue from India, strategic partnerships and deals with companies like Airtel could help the company increase its paid subscriber base in the short term. By demonstrating its ability to convert user growth into revenue, Perplexity aims to attract investors who value geographic diversification and user growth.

Overall, Perplexity’s expansion into India marks a significant milestone in the company’s global expansion strategy. With a focus on capturing the Indian market and leveraging strategic partnerships, Perplexity is positioning itself as a key player in the AI industry, competing with established giants like OpenAI.
