During his campaign, Zohran Mamdani, the leading candidate for mayor in the left-wing, raised concerns about the purpose of jails and prisons, drawing criticism from law enforcement officers who deemed his comments “out of touch” and dangerous.

Mamdani, a socialist from Queens who won the Democratic primary last month, made the controversial statement nearly five years ago while running for his current state Assembly seat.

“I think that frankly, I mean, what purpose do they serve, right?” Mamdani questioned the necessity of prisons during an interview on “The Far Left Show” in August 2020, sparking a debate on the relevance of carceral institutions.

His comments resurfaced on social media recently, causing outrage in the law enforcement community.

One source expressed concern that Mamdani’s views could be detrimental to communities affected by violence and crime, suggesting that the mayoral candidate may need a reality check.

Another source criticized Mamdani’s remarks as “luxury beliefs” that could have serious implications for public safety.

Despite the backlash, Mamdani has remained steadfast in his criticism of the prison system, linking it to issues of white supremacy and advocating for a reduction in the jail population.

In a recent interview, Mamdani emphasized the need for a justice system that focuses on repairing harm and addressing the root causes of crime.

His stance on closing Rikers Island and implementing alternative measures to incarceration has been met with mixed reactions, with some praising his progressive approach while others, including his opponent Curtis Sliwa, have criticized it as impractical and dangerous.

At a mayoral forum earlier this year, Mamdani reiterated his commitment to closing Rikers Island while exploring alternatives to incarceration, a move that has divided opinions among voters.

Overall, Mamdani’s stance on criminal justice reform continues to be a point of contention in the upcoming mayoral election.
