Police Commissioner Addresses Staff Concerns Following Allegations Against Former Deputy

In a recent email to staff, Police Commissioner Richard Chambers acknowledged the anger and disappointment felt by many following the discovery of child exploitation and bestiality material on the work devices of his former deputy, Jevon Skimming. Skimming resigned from his position as deputy police commissioner earlier this year amidst ongoing investigations by the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) and the police department.

Chambers expressed his own feelings of disappointment and emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards within the police force. While unable to comment further on the matter at the time, Chambers assured his staff that action would be taken if standards were not met, regardless of rank or role.

Despite the distraction caused by the allegations, Chambers urged his staff to remain focused on their duties. He also offered support to any staff members who may need to discuss their concerns.

Reactions from the Police Force

Several police officers have expressed their disappointment and concern over the allegations against Skimming. One officer described it as a “sad time for New Zealand police,” while another emphasized the impact of such allegations on the reputation of the force.

Former officers also weighed in on the situation, noting the significant effect it could have on frontline staff. The allegations have sparked conversations within the police community about maintaining trust and upholding the values of the force.

Response from Police Minister Mark Mitchell

Police Minister Mark Mitchell declined to comment directly on the allegations but acknowledged the potential impact on public trust in the police force. He emphasized the swift action taken to address the situation and reaffirmed his confidence in the overall professionalism of the force.

Legal Proceedings and Investigations

Legal proceedings surrounding the allegations against Skimming have been ongoing, with a recent ruling allowing for the reporting of the nature of the objectionable material found on his work devices. The investigations by the IPCA and the police department are still ongoing, with a focus on determining the extent of misconduct and neglect of duty in relation to the allegations.

Skimming’s resignation in the midst of these investigations has raised questions about the handling of sensitive information and the overall integrity of the police force. As the investigations continue, the police are working to address any concerns regarding accountability and transparency within the organization.

Despite the challenges posed by this situation, Commissioner Chambers remains committed to upholding the values of the police force and ensuring that all staff members adhere to the highest standards of conduct.
