The Science Behind Swearing and Improved Physical Performance

Swearing at the gym may no longer be frowned upon, thanks to new research that suggests foul language can actually help boost physical performance. A recent study adds to the growing body of evidence that swearing can unleash our inner strength and help us break through psychological barriers that hold us back.

Psychology researcher Richard Stephens of Keele University in the UK explains, “Swearing is an easily available way to help yourself feel focused, confident, and less distracted, and ‘go for it’ a little more.”

Study Design and Findings

In a series of experiments conducted by researchers at Keele University and the University of Alabama, participants were asked to perform a chair push-up while repeating either a swear word or a neutral word. The results showed that participants were able to hold the pose for longer when swearing, indicating improved physical performance.

Additionally, measures of state disinhibition, including positive emotion, humor, distraction, and novelty, were higher during swear-word sessions compared to neutral-word sessions. This suggests that swearing may help individuals transition into more action-oriented states and enjoy their workout more.

Implications and Future Research

The findings of this study suggest that swearing can promote psychological states conducive to maximizing effort and overcoming internal constraints. While more research is needed to confirm the effects of swearing on inhibitions specifically, the results highlight the potential benefits of using foul language as a tool for performance enhancement.

Lead researcher Richard Stephens emphasizes, “Swearing is literally a calorie-neutral, drug-free, low-cost, readily available tool at our disposal for when we need a boost in performance.”

This groundbreaking research is published in the journal American Psychologist, shedding light on the untapped potential of swearing in improving physical performance.
