Gun violence continues to be a pressing issue in America, with the previous surgeon general Dr. Vivek Murthy declaring it a public health crisis. In 2024 alone, there were 503 mass shootings in the country, averaging more than one per day according to the Gun Violence Archive. The urgency to address this issue was highlighted at the March for Our Lives 2022 event in Washington, D.C., where gun violence prevention activist Erica Ford spoke passionately about the need to end gun violence in communities across the nation.

At the 2024 Milken Institute Future of Health Summit in Washington D.C., an expert panel discussed key solutions to combat gun violence. One of the primary strategies identified was addressing the root causes of violence. Social determinants such as poverty, unemployment, and systemic inequities contribute to the prevalence of gun violence. Dr. Zachary Meisel emphasized the importance of holistic approaches that tackle both the root causes of violence and interventions to change the trajectory of firearm injuries.

Investing in community-based interventions and programs was also highlighted as an effective strategy. These programs, which employ trained community members to mediate conflicts and prevent retaliatory violence, have shown significant success in reducing gun-related deaths in cities like South Bronx and Richmond, California. Advocating for legislative reform, including comprehensive background checks and licensing for firearm ownership, was identified as crucial for preventing gun violence.

Expanding mental health resources was another key solution discussed by the panel. The mental trauma resulting from gun violence can have long-lasting effects on survivors and their families, making access to mental health services essential in reducing suicides by firearms. Strengthening research and data collection in the field of gun violence prevention was also emphasized as a way to inform evidence-based policies and interventions.

While the issue of gun violence remains divisive in America, there is a shared goal of creating safe and secure communities. By coming together and finding common ground, as Angela Ferrell-Zabala of Moms Demand Action noted, progress can be made in preventing gun violence and ensuring the safety of all individuals. The fight against gun violence requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses root causes, invests in community programs, advocates for legislative reform, expands mental health resources, and strengthens research efforts.
