Jamaican sprinter Oblique Seville made headlines recently after defeating reigning Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles at the London Diamond League. The event, which took place at the London Stadium on July 19, saw Seville clock an impressive time of 9.86s in the men’s 100m race, securing a victory over Lyles who finished in second place with a time of 10.00s. Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes rounded out the top three with a time of 10.02s.

Reflecting on his performance, Seville expressed pride in his achievement and hinted at bigger goals on the horizon. “I am proud of how I ran amongst a stacked field, and to win. I was the only one to run under 10 seconds today, it is something special and phenomenal heading into a major championship later this year,” said Seville in an interview after the race.

This victory was not the first time that Seville had outperformed Lyles, as he had previously bested him at the 2024 Racers Grand Prix in Jamaica with a time of 9.82s. Seville’s success on the track continued throughout the 2025 season, with notable performances at the inaugural Grand Slam Track Series events in Kingston and Miami.

Despite facing a pre-race injury at the Jamaican National Championships (JAAA), Seville managed to clock an impressive time of 9.87s in the 100m final, securing his spot for the upcoming 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Seville expressed gratitude for overcoming his struggles and qualifying for the prestigious event alongside fellow Jamaican athletes Kishane Thompson and Ackeem Blake.

In addition to his individual accomplishments, Seville was also part of the Jamaican team that clinched gold in the men’s 4x100m relay at the London Diamond League, finishing with a time of 37.80s. This victory further solidified Seville’s status as a rising star in the world of track and field.
