Liverpool’s questions remain unanswered despite narrow win vs. Atletico Madrid in UCL

Liverpool's questions remain unanswered despite narrow win vs. Atletico Madrid in UCL

As the football season unfolds across England and Europe, marked by managerial shifts and significant transfer activity, the initial matches are crucial in gauging team capabilities. On Wednesday, Atletico Madrid visited Liverpool in what promised to be an enlightening UEFA Champions League opener. Indeed, within minutes, the match was on course to meet expectations. Atleti pierced through Liverpool’s shaky defense with a single pass, securing the lead in the 17th minute, pushing Liverpool to recover if they wished to claim all three points.

After this initial excitement, the game settled into a more predictable pattern.

Liverpool’s early defensive lapse was concerning, as it highlighted a recurring issue in their season and one that existed before coach Andoni Iraola’s arrival. Atleti capitalized on this with Julian Alvarez’s astute pass leading to Marcos Llorente’s impressive goal from the penalty area edge. However, despite creating a promising start, the visitors failed to capitalize further against a defensively vulnerable Liverpool, missing a chance to make a strong European debut.

Llorente’s goal served as a wake-up call for Liverpool, whose attack-heavy lineup seemed destined to respond. Both teams took three shots leading up to and following Llorente’s goal. However, Liverpool regained control, increasing their possession from 35% to nearly 60% by halftime. This shift set the stage for Liverpool’s offensive strategy, which allowed them to outscore their opponents. Ronald Araujo‘s backheel assist to Dominik Szoboszlai secured an equalizer before halftime, and Alexis Mac Allister‘s goal 10 minutes after the break allowed the hosts to cruise to victory.

Despite not fully embodying Iraola’s desired intensity-driven style, Liverpool secured the win. It became evident through their straightforward victory that Atleti were not equipped to challenge Liverpool on this occasion.

As the match progressed, Atleti struggled to maintain their initial momentum. They managed only 0.32 expected goals from six shots post-Llorente’s goal, dwarfed by Liverpool’s 1.39 expected goals from 11 attempts. Aside from comparisons to Liverpool’s performance, Atleti’s output was minimal for 73 minutes of play, including a 29-minute period with no shots.

Individually, Atleti’s forwards found it difficult to influence the game. Alvarez’s performance was in line with his previous season’s averages in touches and shots per game in the Champions League, but the quality of his chances fell short, registering just 0.23 expected goals – less than half his former average of 0.6. Other Atleti attackers struggled as well, with Lee Kang-in contributing a mere 0.02 expected goals and assists during his 59-minute appearance, while Llorente’s goal remained the sole highlight for the visitors.

The outcome on Wednesday need not define Atleti’s season, as they possess the offensive talent needed for their domestic and European pursuits. Alvarez may be affected by the extended transfer saga’s emotional toll, despite moving past the World Cup final loss. Ademola Lookman has shown potential in European campaigns, and Canada international Jonathan David might require time to adjust following his transfer from Juventus.

Ultimately, Atleti failed to challenge Liverpool with the complexities they were expected to face. Observers may have to wait for Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City after an international break to gain further insights. The same can be said for Atleti, whose issues remain unresolved despite last season’s semifinal success.
