Latent Labs, a company that emerged from stealth mode six months ago with a whopping $50 million in funding, has recently unveiled a groundbreaking web-based AI model for programming biology. This cutting-edge model, developed by Latent Labs CEO and founder Simon Kohl, has demonstrated state-of-the-art performance in various metrics when tested in physical lab settings.

Kohl, a former leader of DeepMind’s AlphaFold protein design team, highlighted the model’s ability to assess the quality of protein designs computationally. He emphasized that a significant percentage of the proteins generated by the model prove to be viable when tested in real-world laboratory experiments.

The core of Latent Labs’ innovation lies in its foundational biology model, LatentX, which empowers academic institutions, biotech startups, and pharmaceutical companies to design novel proteins directly through a web browser using natural language. LatentX transcends nature by creating entirely new molecule designs, such as nanobodies and antibodies, with precise atomic structures. This approach accelerates the development of new therapeutics at a remarkable pace.

What sets LatentX apart from AlphaFold is its capability to design entirely new proteins rather than merely predicting existing protein structures. While AlphaFold focuses on protein structure prediction, LatentX enables the generation of novel proteins, opening up new avenues for drug discovery and development.

In contrast to other AI-driven drug discovery companies like Xaira, Recursion, and Isomorphic Labs, which concentrate on proprietary medicine development, Latent Labs adopts a unique business model of licensing its model for external organizations’ use. Kohl emphasized that not every company has the resources to build their AI models and infrastructure, making Latent Labs’ model a valuable resource for a wider range of organizations.

Although LatentX is currently available for free, Kohl hinted at potential future charges for advanced features and capabilities as they are rolled out. Other companies in the AI drug discovery space, such as Chai Discovery and EvolutionaryScale, also provide open-source AI foundational models for drug discovery.

Latent Labs has secured backing from prominent investors, including Radical Ventures, Sofinnova Partners, Google’s Chief Scientist Jeff Dean, Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei, and Eleven Labs CEO Mati Staniszewski. This strong support underscores the potential and promise of Latent Labs’ innovative approach to programming biology through AI.
