The tragic death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner at Playa Grande has sparked controversy surrounding the lack of resources and lifeguard presence on the beach at the time of the incident. The Caribbean Guard, Costa Rica’s volunteer lifeguard association, issued a statement expressing deep regret over Warner’s passing, attributing it to drowning after being swept away by a strong rip current.

According to the Guard, Playa Grande is known for its challenging conditions, with warning signs in both Spanish and English cautioning visitors of the dangers of drowning. Despite patrolling the beach in recent years, the lifeguards claimed they were not present at the time of Warner’s death due to a redirection of resources to other high-risk beaches.

The statement appealed to Costa Rica’s president, Rodrigo Chaves Robles, and the government for support in addressing the increasing number of aquatic incidents across the country. The Guard emphasized the importance of collaboration between authorities, local communities, and business owners to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

News reports confirmed that Warner’s cause of death was ruled as asphyxia, a result of not receiving enough oxygen in his body. The Costa Rican Red Cross responded to the incident at Playa Grande, dispatching ambulances to the scene where Warner was pronounced dead. His body was transferred for an autopsy, revealing that he appeared to have been swept away by a current while in the sea.

Emergency personnel attended to another individual involved in the same incident, who was transported to a local clinic in critical condition. Warner, who had been in Costa Rica since July 13, leaves behind his wife and daughter, whose identities have not been disclosed.

The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety measures and the need for adequate resources and support for lifeguards in high-risk beach areas. Our thoughts are with Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s loved ones during this difficult time.
