Aurora, Colorado, a suburb of Denver, is currently grappling with a surge in crime, particularly due to the infiltration of the migrant gang Tren de Aragua. This gang has been taking over apartment units, engaging in shootouts, and contributing to a rise in retail theft in the area. Business owners have expressed concerns about the increased criminal activity, prompting them to hire private security to protect their establishments.

In response to the escalating crime rates, the city of Aurora has allocated an additional $10 million to the budget of the Aurora Police Department for the upcoming year. This increase in funding aims to hire more police officers to address the crime spillover from the neighboring sanctuary city of Denver. The city has earmarked 30% of next year’s budget, totaling over $165 million, for law enforcement efforts.

Chief Todd Chamberlain of the Aurora Police Department acknowledged the challenges they are facing due to understaffing issues. He emphasized the need to recruit more officers to bolster the patrol force and enhance law enforcement capabilities. The presence of Tren de Aragua, a notorious gang originating from Venezuelan prisons, has been linked to numerous criminal activities in Aurora, prompting over 100 criminal investigations in recent months.

Apart from Tren de Aragua, business owners like Doug McMurrain have reported a rise in shoplifting incidents, necessitating the hiring of private security guards to combat the crime. McMurrain, owner of the La Plaza retail outlet, highlighted the daily challenges he faces due to criminal activities in the area. He expressed the importance of a more responsive police force in addressing these issues and ensuring the safety of businesses and residents.

In addition to increasing police presence, Aurora officials are considering legal action against Denver, the state of Colorado, and Governor Jared Polis for policies that have facilitated the influx of migrants and hindered local governments from assisting federal authorities in combating migrant-related crimes. Several Colorado counties have already filed lawsuits against Governor Polis and the state in response to these concerns.

The situation in Aurora underscores the complex challenges faced by communities dealing with rising crime rates and the need for coordinated efforts to ensure public safety. By allocating resources to law enforcement, enhancing collaboration with neighboring jurisdictions, and exploring legal avenues to address underlying issues, Aurora is taking proactive steps to address the crime wave and protect its residents.
