It’s a hard lop life.
Lorena Bobbitt, notorious for severing her husband’s penis, is now living a quiet suburban life with her long-term partner, over 30 years after gaining nationwide attention.
Bobbitt made shocking headlines on June 23, 1993, when she used an 8-inch kitchen knife to cut off the manhood of her sleeping husband, John Wayne Bobbitt, 26. She then fled their Manassas, Virginia home with the severed part.
Panicked, the 24-year-old Gallo threw the detached part out of her car window into a field near a 7-Eleven and called the police.
At 56, she resides in a rented four-bedroom home valued at $640,000 in Prince William County, roughly an hour south of Washington, DC, according to the Daily Mail.
Living under her original name, Lorena Gallo, the Ecuadorian-born woman shares the home with her partner, Dave Bellinger, 56, their daughter Olivia, 21, and their dog, as reported by the outlet.
Photographs depict the couple in gym attire, walking their dog, and attending church services, embodying the typical suburban lifestyle.
Bellinger has a criminal record with 26 violations, including credit card theft, fraud, embezzlement, and numerous traffic offenses, according to the Daily Mail.
The couple met in community college in the late 1990s, a few years after Gallo was acquitted of malicious wounding due to temporary insanity in January 1994.
Neighbors report that the couple remains outcasts in their community, with some humorously suggesting Bellinger is afraid to marry the former Mrs. Bobbitt.
“It’s fun to talk about. You can always start a conversation by saying, ‘Guess who lives on my block?’” neighbor Amelia Stern told the outlet.
“The guys in the neighborhood have the most fun with it. I guess she [Gallo] seems nice enough, but let’s just say that I’m not worried about her seducing my husband. He’s afraid of her.”
A male neighbor, who asked not to be named, admitted to having misgivings about talking to Gallo.
“I don’t have anything against her, but I can’t see her without imagining her driving around town with a cut-off penis in her hand,” he said.
Gallo claimed she snapped after enduring years of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, including an alleged rape earlier that evening.
Her husband was charged but later acquitted of marital sexual assault by a jury in late 1993.
The severed part was found by police in a field near the 7-Eleven, packed in ice, and reattached after four hours of surgery.
“I thought I was going to die. Just imagine what it was like. Worst night of my life,” Bobbitt told the Daily Mail.
Astonishingly, the penis began functioning normally again within months, and Bobbitt would go on to appear in a series of pornographic films in the 1990s.
Bobbitt has long denied that he assaulted his ex-wife.
Meanwhile, Gallo has dedicated much of the past 30 years to advocating for domestic violence victims, establishing her nonprofit, The Lorena Gallo Foundation, in 2018.
