FX is gearing up to release their first-ever TV series take on the iconic “Alien” franchise, thanks to the creative mind of multihyphenate Noah Hawley. About eight years ago, Hawley presented a five-page pitch to FX outlining his vision for the “Alien” universe, inspired by Ridley Scott’s original film from 1979.

Fast forward to today, and FX is preparing to debut “Alien: Earth” on August 12, a project that has been years in the making. In a recent episode of the “Daily Variety” podcast, Daniel D’Addario, Variety’s chief correspondent, delves into the behind-the-scenes process of bringing this ambitious series to life. D’Addario reveals that Hawley’s initial outline from eight years ago remains largely intact in the final product, a testament to the strength of his vision for adapting “Alien” for a modern TV audience.

Hawley’s reputation as a prolific “idea machine” has earned him the trust of FX leadership, a crucial factor considering the significant investment the network has made in “Alien: Earth.” D’Addario highlights Hawley’s ability to navigate the “Alien” IP while still infusing the series with his own unique creative voice.

In addition to the discussion on “Alien: Earth,” the podcast episode also features insights from Adam B. Vary, Variety’s senior entertainment writer, on what to expect from the upcoming San Diego Comic Con. Vary recently sat down with Marvel chief Kevin Feige, who candidly addressed the studio’s challenges in recent years.

Feige acknowledged that Marvel had become overextended as they ramped up production to meet the demands of Disney+, resulting in a dilution of the brand’s quality. With Comic Con on the horizon, Vary predicts a quieter event this year, with Marvel and DC Studios scaling back their presence.
