Donald Trump’s presidency was marked by a series of missteps, leaving many puzzled by his re-election. Yet, his second term seems less a testament to his popularity and more a reflection of waning support for the Democrats.
Since assuming office, Trump has been consistent in delivering a barrage of unmet promises and contentious policies, largely disregarding the preferences of the American populace.
Recently, a Gallup poll has further illustrated the shifting sentiments among voters:
President Donald Trump’s job approval has plummeted to 37%, marking the lowest of his current term and only slightly above his dismal 34% rating at the close of his first term. Since January, his approval has dropped by 10 percentage points among U.S. adults, with a staggering 17-point decline among independents, now standing at just 29%—matching his lowest support within this group across both terms.

Trump’s approval ratings regarding various domestic and foreign issues remain disheartening. He receives the highest approval for his approach to Iran (42%) and foreign affairs (41%). However, his ratings dip to 38% for immigration, 37% for the economy, and further down to 36% for his handling of the Israeli-Palestinian situation and foreign trade. His management of Ukraine (33%) and the federal budget (29%) fares even worse.
The urgent need for Trump to manipulate district boundaries in Texas to secure more Republican seats arises from these alarming poll numbers, which herald a potential rout for his party in the upcoming midterm elections.
Rather than improving his standing, the One Big Beautiful Bill has exacerbated Trump and his party’s already precarious situation. His approval ratings have dipped into the thirties for immigration and trade, with not a single issue reflecting positive approval.
Ultimately, Trump risks cementing his legacy as one of the least favored and most ineffective presidents in American history. Alarmingly for Republicans, it appears he has yet to hit rock bottom; there may be more support to lose.
