San Diego Comic Con Welcomes Peace with John Cenaâs Peacemaker
San Diego Comic Con experienced a moment of peace on Saturday as John Cena made a grand entrance in full costume as his DC Universe character, Peacemaker. The Hall H panel saw Cena joined by showrunner and DC Studios co-president James Gunn, along with co-stars Frank Grillo, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows.
The panel kicked off with the unveiling of the new Season 2 trailer, showcasing Peacemaker’s journey through a portal to an alternate dimension where he faces new challenges. The trailer also hints at inter-dimensional problems caused by Peacemaker’s actions, including a conflict with Rick Flag Sr. (played by Frank Grillo) who seeks justice for the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr. (portrayed by Joel Kinnaman in “The Suicide Squad”).
The cast delved into the intriguing opening credits of “Peacemaker,” including a viral dance sequence from Season 1. Gunn shared that they aimed to maintain the essence of the first season’s credits without overdoing it in Season 2.
Reflecting on the new opening credits, Gunn mentioned, âIt isnât trying to one-up the first season. Itâs bigger, thereâs a different vibe to it. New characters, different dancers.â
Holland revealed a special homage in the dance moves, stating, âWe have an amazing choreographer who took Jamesâ idea and vibe he was going for and made something special. I had an amazing time doing it. I donât want to spoil anything but there is one particular thing I requested to the universe: âPlease allow me to do the lift from âDirty Dancing.ââ I got to do a lift and itâs amazing.â
Adding a touch of humor, Grillo joked, âThe dancing started out as something I reluctantly did and it turned into me being the best dancer on stage.â
“Peacemaker” Season 2 is set to premiere on HBO Max on Aug. 21, consisting of eight episodes. The new season arrives more than three years after the debut of Season 1, which aired in early 2022. In the interim, Gunn and Safran took on leadership roles at DC Studios, overseeing the reboot of the DC Universe with projects like “Superman” and “Creature Commandos,” while HBO Max underwent a name change from simply Max to HBO Max and back.
Cena shines as the patriotic mercenary Christopher Smith, alias Peacemaker, introduced in Gunn’s 2021 film “The Suicide Squad.” In Season 1 of the series, Peacemaker tackles a mission to eradicate parasitic aliens controlling human minds. His heroic actions lead to a memorable encounter with the old Justice League, portrayed by actors who have since moved on from their roles. Most recently, Cena’s Peacemaker made a cameo in Gunn’s “Superman,” appearing on a conservative talk show.
