In 2026, New Zealand’s top netball players may face potential pay cuts as the broadcast deal for the ANZ Premiership remains unresolved. The delay in securing a television agreement for next season could lead players to seek additional sources of income to make ends meet, as expressed by Steph Bond, the executive manager of the New Zealand Netball Players Association.

The uncertainty surrounding the broadcast deal has left players feeling unsettled, with negotiations ongoing to determine the financial landscape for the upcoming season. While players managed to avoid significant pay cuts this year through a collective employment agreement, the prospect of reduced earnings in the future is disappointing for the netball community.

Despite the challenges, the Netball Players Association is supportive of players exploring opportunities in Australia to advance their careers amidst the uncertainty surrounding the New Zealand competition. Netball New Zealand has recently updated its Silver Ferns eligibility criteria to provide greater flexibility for athletes interested in playing overseas.

As negotiations continue, players are hopeful for a resolution that will support the growth and sustainability of netball in New Zealand. The potential for pay cuts underscores the importance of securing a favorable broadcast deal to ensure the financial stability of players and the long-term success of the sport.
