Multiple Iranian nationals have been indicted on criminal charges in connection with the hacking of former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign. The federal grand jury approved the indictment, and the Justice Department is expected to announce the charges soon, as reported by Politico.

The charges stem from an Iranian cyber operation targeting the Trump campaign earlier this year. The hackers stole material from the Republican nominee’s team and offered it to media outlets and President Biden’s campaign, possibly in an attempt to influence the outcome of the 2024 election.

Last month, the Trump campaign confirmed the hacking and attributed it to Tehran. Politico received a dossier on GOP vice presidential nominee JD Vance from an AOL email account linked to an entity named “Robert.” The contents of the dossier were not disclosed.

FBI, Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency officials confirmed that Iran was responsible for the hack and also attempted to breach Biden campaign email accounts. Microsoft and Google previously reported Iran’s intrusion into a campaign.

US security agencies revealed that the stolen Trump campaign material was shared with individuals associated with Biden’s re-election campaign, particularly those who continued working for Vice President Kamala Harris after Biden withdrew from the race. There is no evidence that the recipients responded to the Iranian messages.

Hackers representing foreign governments are typically located overseas in countries that do not extradite them to the US, making it unlikely for them to face trial. Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen stated that Iran is exerting more effort to influence the current election compared to previous cycles, with their activity becoming more aggressive as the election approaches.

Recently, Trump was briefed by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an attempt to disrupt and create chaos in the US. Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, mentioned that Iran had taken actions that did not succeed.

The Justice Department has been contacted for further comments on the matter.
