A courageous California mother took matters into her own hands when she caught two burglars leaving her home and stealing her belongings. Kiara Ortiz, a personal fitness trainer, had just returned home with her two children when they spotted the thieves exiting their Torrance apartment in southwestern Los Angeles.

Her son immediately noticed the burglars with his piggy bank, prompting Ortiz to spring into action. She chased after the thieves, recording them on her phone as they made a run for their dark green BMW. Ortiz managed to catch up to the getaway car and used her bare hand to smash the rear window before the burglars could escape.

The burglars fled with Ortiz’s jewelry, $100 in cash, her son’s piggy bank, and even managed to steal her handgun from a lockbox in her bedroom. Despite feeling violated and angry, Ortiz expressed gratitude that her family was safe and not home during the break-in.

During the chase, Ortiz’s son was able to snap a photo of the BMW’s license plate. However, it was later discovered to be a stolen plate that did not match the vehicle. Despite the setback, Ortiz remains hopeful that the thieves will be brought to justice.

The Torrance Police Department is actively investigating the burglary and has urged community members to report any suspicious activity promptly. A crime analysis report released by the department in April revealed that there have been 86 residential burglaries in Torrance in 2025.

Ortiz’s quick thinking and bravery in confronting the burglars highlight the importance of remaining vigilant and taking action to protect one’s home and loved ones. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for community members to work together to ensure the safety and security of their neighborhoods.
