A 33-year-old man who was on felony pretrial release is now facing attempted murder charges after allegedly shooting his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend on the West Side sidewalk last month. Deontay Logan appeared in court, where Judge Rivanda Doss Beal ordered him to be detained following a hearing that revealed the details of the incident that occurred on June 1 in the 3600 block of West Polk Street.

The victim, a 27-year-old man, was walking home from the CTA Blue Line’s Homan station around 3:55 a.m. when his ex-girlfriend called and upset him. As he approached her residence, which was on his route home, he attempted to break a window on a Buick owned by the woman’s sister. However, he fled when she noticed him. Moments later, the same Buick approached him, this time with his ex-girlfriend behind the wheel and Logan as the passenger. The victim reported that he saw Logan raise a gun and open fire, hitting him twice in the upper left leg as he tried to escape. He eventually collapsed in the nearby home of his current girlfriend.

An officer stationed in the neighborhood for the Chicago Half Marathon heard the gunfire and saw the victim running. Police and paramedics found him bleeding on a bedroom floor with a firearm nearby on a dresser. License plate readers identified the Buick, and the victim later provided an Instagram photo timestamped about an hour after the shooting that showed his ex driving the same car with Logan in the passenger seat. A search warrant executed on Logan’s Instagram account revealed multiple images of him with firearms and a post made after police arrested his girlfriend, advising people not to speak with law enforcement.

Logan’s girlfriend was released without charges. At the time of the shooting, Logan was already on pretrial release following an arrest in Wrigleyville on April 12, where he allegedly assaulted two men and was found carrying a baggie containing 100 suspected oxycodone pills. He also had a prior conviction in 2022 for being a felon in possession of a firearm, for which he received a 30-month prison sentence. Logan is now facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery by discharging a firearm.

This incident marks the tenth case this year involving individuals charged with shooting, killing, or attempting to kill someone in Chicago while on felony pretrial release. These cases have resulted in 23 victims, three of whom have tragically lost their lives.

The report continues to shed light on individuals accused of violent crimes while on pretrial release for felony allegations. This series of reports began in November 2019 after Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans claimed that there hadn’t been any “horrible incidents” under the court’s bond reform initiative. However, the actual number of murders and shootings committed by individuals awaiting trial for felony charges is likely much higher than reported. Since 2017, charges have been brought in less than 5% of non-fatal shootings and 33% of murders according to the city’s data.

This ongoing series serves to highlight the concerning trend of violence committed by individuals on pretrial release for serious criminal allegations.
