The trial of an American man accused of producing and selling pornographic videos online began in Indonesia on Wednesday. Taylor Kirby Whitemore, 39, was arrested for misusing his tourist visa by promoting paid pornographic content featuring himself and local women. The trial, held behind closed doors at the South Jakarta District Court, could result in Whitemore facing up to five years in prison and a fine of up to 500 million rupiah ($30,540) if found guilty.
Whitemore’s Indonesian lawyer, Erwin Siregar, argued that his client should only face deportation for violating his tourist visa, rather than criminal proceedings. Siregar acknowledged that Whitemore had improperly used a visa granted by the Indonesian government.
Indonesia has strict laws against pornography, with the government regularly blocking access to websites containing such material. This case is significant as it is the first time an immigration violation has been brought to a criminal court in Indonesia. The trial highlights the country’s efforts to crack down on the production and distribution of pornographic content.
