Zohran Mamdani, the socialist mayoral frontrunner in NYC, found himself in hot water during his undergraduate years at Bowdoin College in Maine. Mamdani and a friend were caught stealing a table from the campus, a crime they only admitted to after being confronted by campus security.

In a column for The Bowdoin Orient titled “Idiots Steal Table,” Mamdani humorously recounted the events leading up to the theft. He confessed to eyeing the table since his freshman year and eventually hatching a plan to “borrow” it for a few nights. The theft was premeditated, with Mamdani and his friend carrying the table in broad daylight from one building to another.

However, Mamdani’s plan hit a snag when campus security, led by Randy Nichols, a retired Maine State Trooper, caught wind of the missing table. Nichols called Mamdani to inquire about the whereabouts of the table, leading Mamdani to confess to the theft. Despite the gravity of the situation, Mamdani maintained a light-hearted tone in his column, expressing his admiration for Nichols and accepting whatever consequences came his way.

Mamdani, who graduated from Bowdoin College in 2014 with a degree in Africana studies, faced uncertainty regarding potential punishment for his actions. Nichols did not respond to inquiries about the incident, and representatives for Mamdani did not provide any additional comments.

The story of Mamdani’s table theft serves as a humorous anecdote from his college days, showcasing a lighter side to the now prominent political figure. Despite the questionable ethics displayed in his youth, Mamdani’s journey from table thief to mayoral candidate is a testament to growth and transformation over time.
