Standing up for what’s right

Despite the challenges and pushback, I have no regrets about my decision to resign from Tulane University. Academic freedom is a fundamental principle that must be upheld, no matter the consequences. As scientists, researchers, and academics, we have a duty to pursue truth and knowledge, even when it may be uncomfortable or inconvenient for those in power. Censorship and suppression of research have no place in a democratic society that values the pursuit of knowledge and the free exchange of ideas.

While my time at Tulane may have come to an end, I am committed to continuing my research and advocacy for environmental justice. The issues I have uncovered regarding racial disparities in the petrochemical industry and the impact of pollution on vulnerable communities are too important to ignore. I will not be silenced, and I will continue to speak out against injustice and inequality wherever I see it.

Academic freedom is not just a privilege for a select few; it is a right that must be protected for all who seek to expand human knowledge and understanding. I hope that my experience at Tulane will serve as a wake-up call for other researchers and academics who may be facing similar challenges. We must stand together and fight for our right to pursue truth and knowledge, no matter the obstacles in our way.

As for Tulane University, I can only hope that they will reconsider their stance on academic freedom and prioritize the pursuit of knowledge over financial gain. The suppression of research and the censorship of scientists is a dangerous path to go down, and it is one that ultimately harms not only the academic community but society as a whole. I urge Tulane to reflect on their actions and make the necessary changes to ensure that academic freedom is upheld and respected in the future.

For me, the fight for academic freedom continues, and I am more determined than ever to stand up for what is right. I may have left Tulane, but my commitment to truth and justice remains unwavering. And I know that as long as there are researchers and scientists willing to speak out against injustice, the pursuit of knowledge will never be silenced.

Tulane University is currently facing backlash and controversy following the refusal to release a report regarding the Tulane Environmental Law Clinic. The report, which was conducted independently, has been kept under wraps by the university, even from the law clinic directors who were interviewed for it. This decision has raised concerns about transparency and academic freedom within the institution.

The situation escalated further when former faculty member, William Snape, resigned from his position, citing concerns over the university’s actions. This sparked public protests and a letter signed by over 200 students and alumni expressing their outrage. Despite this, Tulane’s administration has stood firm in their decision to withhold the report and restrict academic freedom for non-faculty researchers.

In response to the growing controversy, Tulane’s Provost sent out an email to all faculty members, pledging to uphold faculty academic freedom. However, the omission of staff, students, and post-docs in this communication raised alarm among the faculty community. It is clear that President Fitts and Provost Forman are facing mounting pressure to address these issues and restore trust within the university community.

As the debate over academic freedom and transparency continues, it is crucial for individuals to stand up for the Tulane Environmental Law Clinic and demand accountability from university leadership. President Fitts and Provost Forman must recognize that academic freedom is a universal right that should not be compromised or sold for any reason.

Join the growing community of individuals advocating for transparency and academic freedom at Tulane University by reaching out to President Fitts ([email protected]) and Provost Forman ([email protected]). It is essential to hold university leaders accountable and ensure that academic freedom is upheld for all members of the community. Let’s work together to create a culture of transparency and integrity at Tulane University.
