A recent study by Andre Rowe and Emily Rayfield at the University of Bristol in the UK has shed light on the diverse feeding strategies of gigantic dinosaurs. The researchers examined the skulls of 18 species of theropods from the Mesozoic Era, including iconic dinosaurs like T. Rex, Giganotosaurus, and Spinosaurus.

According to Eric Snively from Oklahoma State University, each dinosaur had a unique approach to hunting and consuming prey. Giganotosaurus utilized its thin, serrated teeth for slashing flesh, while the semi-aquatic Spinosaurus had crocodile-like teeth for catching large fish.

Using 3D scans of the skulls, the researchers analyzed the bite mechanics of these dinosaurs. They discovered that Tyrannosaurus rex had a stronger, bone-crushing bite compared to Giganotosaurus and Spinosaurus. This finding suggests that Tyrannosaurus rex evolved a specialized feeding strategy for competitive hunting during the Late Cretaceous Period.

Fion Waisum Ma from the Beipiao Pterosaur Museum of China emphasized the complexity of these top predators’ feeding behaviors. She noted that Tyrannosaurus rex developed a unique strategy due to the competitive environment of its time.
