In 14 states across the country, schools are implementing phone-free policies to create distraction-free learning environments. Virginia joined this trend in 2024 when Governor Glenn Youngkin signed an executive order mandating no phone use during instructional time. As a high school teacher who successfully enforced a no-phones policy in her classroom, I want to share some insights for teachers who may be considering implementing a similar policy.

Before the school year begins, it’s essential to have a well-thought-out plan in place. When deciding how to implement a no-phones policy, consider factors such as phone storage, location, security, and accountability. Providing designated storage pouches for phones, ensuring secure mounting, and establishing accountability through numbered pouches and desks are crucial steps to enforce the policy effectively.

On the first day of school, it’s essential to set clear expectations and instructions regarding the phone policy. Using a credible tone rather than an approachable one when directing students to place their phones in the pouch can help establish authority and ensure compliance. Building buy-in from students by demonstrating adherence to the policy yourself and addressing their concerns can help foster trust and cooperation.

Consistency is key to the success of a phone-free policy. By maintaining a routine of phone checks, enforcing the policy uniformly, and addressing any pushback or non-compliance promptly, teachers can create a classroom environment conducive to learning. Over time, students will adapt to the policy, leading to improved academic engagement, better relationships among peers, and enhanced academic outcomes.

While implementing and enforcing a no-phones policy may initially seem challenging, the benefits of a distraction-free classroom are well worth the effort. By creating a structured and engaging learning environment, teachers can cultivate deeper connections with students, improve academic performance, and promote a more focused and collaborative classroom atmosphere.

As the new school year approaches, educators can prepare by envisioning a phone-free classroom, developing a plan for implementation, and committing to consistent enforcement. By following these tips and reminders, teachers can effectively manage a phone-free policy and create a positive and productive learning environment for their students.
