Maria Høgh Heilmann made a bold move to celebrate Aiayu’s “20 turns around the sun” by showcasing her first-ever runway debut. The event took place at Nils Stærk gallery, where guests were treated to a display of ease and serenity in motion. Aiayu’s designs are characterized by their simplicity and warmth, embodying the essence of aiayu, which means soul in Aymaran, the language of Bolivia’s indigenous people.
With two decades under its belt, Aiayu produces its wares in various countries including Bolivia, India, Mongolia, Nepal, and Europe. The brand’s roots trace back to South America in 2005, where Heilmann, a seasoned fashion designer with experience at Neil Barrett and a background in fashion and knitwear design, found inspiration for a new direction in the fashion industry. She expressed her desire to reconnect with nature, work with natural materials, and be closer to the artisans who possess a deep understanding of these materials.
The spring collections unveiled at the runway show featured a range of garments such as crisp cotton shirtdresses, linen shorts, sweaters styled as scarves, and tanks layered over T-shirt dresses. While the designs may appear simplistic at first glance, the perfect balance and restraint demonstrated in pieces like a sleeveless sweater paired with trousers in harmonious shades of blue demand a certain level of confidence and commitment from the wearer. These clothes are not just meant to be worn, but to be lived in, designed for long-lasting wear.
Aiayu’s designs seamlessly blend into modern interiors characterized by simplicity and light-filled spaces, reflecting their ethos of creating timeless pieces that stand the test of time. Maria Høgh Heilmann’s vision for the brand continues to resonate with those who appreciate quality craftsmanship, natural materials, and a sense of soulful elegance. As Aiayu embarks on its next chapter, it remains true to its roots while charting a new course in the ever-evolving landscape of sustainable fashion.
