In a notable policy shift, Germany has announced it will cease arms exports to Israel due to concerns that these military supplies may be utilized in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

This decision follows the recent approval by Israel’s security cabinet of an extensive plan to exert full control over the Gaza Strip, including a significant offensive in Gaza City—a move that has drawn sharp criticism from various European nations.

Israeli officials defend this strategy as essential for dismantling Hamas’s military infrastructure, while critics vehemently argue that it constitutes an act of ethnic cleansing.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz, while reaffirming Germany’s support for Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas, declared that all military export approvals would be suspended “until further notice.”

Merz expressed growing difficulty in understanding how Israel’s current military approach could align with international law. “Given these circumstances, the German government will not authorize any exports of military equipment that could be deployed in the Gaza Strip,” he stated.

For the past five years, Germany has been one of Israel’s largest suppliers of arms, second only to the United States, according to global defense analysts. This recent decision marks a significant departure for one of Europe’s key powers, although the Biden administration seems to have no intention of adopting a similar stance.

“Israel has the right to defend itself against the terror of Hamas,” Merz emphasized, while also suggesting that the primary objectives should include freeing hostages, pursuing a ceasefire, and ensuring Hamas’s disarmament.

In a recent interview with Fox News, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that Israel does not seek to take on the responsibilities of governing Gaza after the conflict concludes.

“Well, we don’t want to keep it,” he stated. “We want to establish a security perimeter. We do not intend to govern it or act as a governing authority.”

Netanyahu further articulated that Israel aims to transfer control to Arab forces capable of governing the area effectively without posing a threat to Israel and providing a better quality of life for Gazans, something he claims is impossible under Hamas’s rule.
